Have you ever wondered why menopausal skin seems to age so much faster than in younger women? I have heard that we age 10 times faster, and the thought doesn’t exactly fill me with glee…
Hormonally, estrogen levels decrease during menopause and androgens and adrenalin take over. This is why menopausal women often feel unexplainable anxiety for no apparent reason. It is because the adrenalin levels are higher than we are used to and the brain interprets it as a sign of danger. The reason why we produce more adrenalin is because it is chemically similar to estrogen.. The body can use it in place of estrogen, although, emotionally, we don’t know this…
The effect of sun exposure on menopausal skin…
Lack of estrogen also causes lack of collagen in the skin. In addition, UV exposure breaks down the collagen even further. So, once you hit menopause, using sunscreen is more important than ever if you want your skin to stay smooth longer.
Another reason to stay out of the sun is the tendency to create age spots. This is also caused by dips in estrogen levels, so that explains why it happens more to menopausal women.
So, here you have 2 good reasons to stay out of the sun after 50. If you have to be in the sun, use a hat or at least some good sunscreen, and stay in the shade as much as possible.
Thinner skin
Last but not least, less estrogen causes a slower cell turnover rate, which eventually leads to thinner skin. The remedy for this is to exfoliate gently and regularly. By removing old skin cells, you stimulate the skin into producing more new cells. Just be careful not to overdo the scrubbing…
3 magic products for delaying these depressing skin changes
My 3 pics would be:
Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizer
Oatmeal Face Scrub
Mineral Face Balm with zinc and titanium
We all get old eventually, that is just a fact of life. But believe me when I say that it taking care of your skin can make a huge difference. My 99 year old grandmother was a great example of someone with beautiful skin despite her age. We always used to make fun of her for all the potions and lotions in her bathroom, but she has proven us all wrong. Good skincare makes a huge difference….
